Bachelor of Business Studies (Hons) – Level 8

The BBS (Hons) is a four-year, part-time programme that provides a comprehensive examination and analysis of the subjects critical to contemporary business life, focusing on accounting principles and techniques. It includes two interim awards – at Certificate and Diploma level.

Flexible Learning

The programme can be taken through distance education at Laois Third Level Centre, Portarlington, Co. Laois.

Lectures

Lectures are delivery on one night per week for three hours at Laois Third Level Centre, Portarlington.  These weekly lectures are support by seminars and compulsory weekends held in the Institute of Public Administration.

Audience

Graduates of this programme can apply for substantial exemptions from the examinations of the:

  • Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)
  • Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
  • Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland (CPA)

The student can decide after successful completion of the Business Studies Certificate (Year 1) to choose their core pathway for the remaing three years in Accounting, Information Technology, Human Resource Management or Marketing.

Accreditation

This degree is accredited by the National University of Ireland (NUI). It is placed at Level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).

Year Three

Financial Accounting

This course extends student’s understanding of the principles and methods in the preparation of accounts. It covers company accounting, consolidated accounts, the interpretation of accounts, and company reorganisations.

Management Accounting

Providing vital information to managers within an organisation, this course explores its key components: budgeting, advanced variance analysis, activity-based costing and pricing.

Financial Management

This course explores the crucial elements in financial decision-making.

Enterprise and Project Management

This course addresses enterprise and the management of business relationships.

Year Four

Auditing

This course provides a comprehensive explanation of what a financial audit is.

Business Policy

The primary aim of this course is to explain the pivotal importance of strategic thinking and policy development to modern management.

Management Accounting Applications and Control

This course applies quantitative methods to accounting principles and processes.

Taxation

Any coherent analysis of an organisation’s accounts must encompass taxation issues.
