Introduction

This part-time one year course is delivered by The National Counselling Institute of Ireland (NCII). The National Counselling Institute of Ireland is now recognised as one of the leading professional bodies in Ireland. It is the only professional body with a dedicated centre for counselling located at Castletroy, Limerick City.

Programme aims

This course serves as an excellent basis for those who wish to extend their knowledge and experience of counselling prior to undertaking more advanced training in councelling, psychotherapy, psychology or other related disciplines.

The course is intended is designed for (a) those who have little or no professional experience but wish to extend their knowledge of interpersonal and counselling skills prior to undertaking more advanced training in counselling at Degree level and (b) healthcare professionals, teachers, social workers, managers and others who wish to increase their interpersonal and counselling skills and apply them within their professional practice.

Students undertake a number of key areas that explore the relationship between counselling and society. Experimental learning and skills practice are central to this course. The course is designed to be flexible to meet people’s busy lives.

Award

This course is certified by the NCII. Candidates who successfully complete this certificate can count the HETAC Credits obtained towards a variety of Level 7 Degree courses offered by the Institute.

Characteristics of an effective Counsellor The helping relationship & the culture of helping The therapeutic/working alliance
The value of respect and genuineness Attending, Listening and Understanding Paraphrasing, clarifying and summarising
Questioning skills within the client relationship Goal setting within the client relationship Reflecting content and feeling within the client relationship

Duration

This certificate course is delivered over 16 weeks, starting in October. Classes take place one evening a week for 3 hours.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific academic requirements with applicants considered based on relevant work and other experience. There is no minimum age for this part time programme.

Cost

The cost of this course is €950.
